April 18, 2008 “Spraying & Praying” While Being Uninteresting - How NOT to Get Interviews! I just completed a podcast for my advice column with Dale on the subject of improving your chances of getting job interviews. With the economy tanking, unemployment at a 3-year high, and consumer confidence at an all-time low, job searching becomes frenetic. Unfortunately, most folks work harder not smarter. This 10 minute audio explains how to improve your chances of getting noticed, and more importantly, getting a phone call.

November 15, 2007 My Deathbed Advice to ManagersI was reading a post from Ask A Manager this week about a challenge he was taking on from The Happy Employee. The blog’s author is asking HR folks to post the 5 things they would say to managers if they were on their deathbed and had nothing to lose. (He even stressed that our honesty would be held against us in our next life!) I found this idea intriguing and decided to give it a shot. Here it goes… (more…)

August 16, 2007 Helicopter Managing Fails With Some Gen Y - Corporate America’s Pushing BackI recently wrote a post for my friends over at www.employeeevolution.com. Imagine my surprise when it had more than 2000 reads in the first two hours it posted! Those guys are doing something right with their blog. How do I know? By the heart-felt dialog that ensued between Baby Boomer and Gen Y readers of my post.
If you are looking to understand first-hand the disconnect between the generations in the workplace today, read this post and the dialog beneath it. It’s time for employees to stop complaining about one another and to start to find some common ground to work from. I think that begins with HR teams finding ways to help all their employees feel more satisfied and successful on-the-job. When an employee is happy, they are more tolerant and in a better position to help those around them. There is a smart quote that says, “Anger is fear turned outward.” For those of you with angry employees, ask yourself: What are they afraid of?
Here’s the post that can help you begin to unlock the answers…

August 1, 2007 Ugly “E” Word - Not Just For Gen YBy J.T. O’Donnell
The word ‘entitlement’ is being used so much to describe Gen Y workers these days, to me, it’s now known as the ugly ‘E’ word. While not a part of that generation, I’m still tired of seeing Gen Ys get a bad rap for their professional attitudes. As the old saying goes, “Those who throw stones, shouldn’t live in glass houses.” Entitlement in the workplace isn’t a generational issue – it’s a societal issue, and it’s affecting every generation in the American workforce today. June 29, 2007 It’s an Employee Evolution for Ryan & RyanOne of the most interesting blogs I’ve come across and added to my regular reading lately is www.EmployeeEvolution.com. Ryan and Ryan, two former college roommates, are 23 year old members of corporate America looking to change the way it works. Their site is getting a lot of attention, and for good reason… (more…)

PORTSMOUTH — There’s a war going on in the workplace today.
That’s the contention of J.T. O’Donnell, a career development specialist who operates J.T. O’Donnell Career Insights in North Hampton, and many of the young professionals who attended a recent forum sponsored by the catapult networking organization on bridging workplace generation gaps. (more…)

June 23, 2007 Three Rules to Managing UpIf you are a Gen NEXT(a.k.a. Gen Y, Millennial) employee looking to get ahead at your current job, here are three rules to successfully working with those who can help your career. Managing up is not difficult, and the benefits are worth the time and energy it takes to master it. Managing up is not manipulation, it is simply understanding how to create an exchange that is mutually beneficial, and this kind of exchange cannot occur without trust between both parties. Which leads to the first rule of managing up: (more…)

June 16, 2007 Corporate America: Prepare For Leadership Drought Now, Or Pay LaterThere’s a talent shortage coming, and those of us managing today’s workforce must pay heed and take some action, or deal with the consequences in as little as 5 years. Sadly, our workforce is suffering from a serious lack of excitement about work. More than half of Americans are unhappy on-the-job. And dissatisfaction can make an employee shy away from taking on more responsibility, a.k.a. being a leader. (more…)
